SPN 3482 FMI 18 — Aftertreatment DEF Dosing Quantity Below Normal

Medium Severity

SPN 3482 FMI 18 — Aftertreatment DEF Dosing Quantity Below Normal

SPN 3482 FMI 18 means the DEF dosing system is delivering less fluid than commanded. This is a supply-and-injector path diagnosis. Verify pump pressure and line integrity before replacing the dosing injector.

Fault Overview

The DEF dosing system delivers precise quantities of urea solution to the exhaust upstream of the SCR catalyst. FMI 18 (below normal) is set when actual dosing quantity falls below the commanded target. This reduces SCR efficiency and can escalate to SPN 4364 (efficiency) and SPN 5246 (inducement). Clogged doser nozzles, weak pump pressure, and frozen or restricted lines are the most common causes.

Engine & Platform Coverage

Cummins ISX / X15Detroit DD13 / DD15PACCAR MX-11 / MX-13Volvo D11 / D13Mack MP7 / MP8All EPA10+ SCR platforms with active DEF dosing

Symptoms

  • •DEF dosing quantity low fault active
  • •SCR efficiency declining
  • •DEF doser fault message
  • •Crystallization deposits at doser nozzle
  • •Efficiency derate following dosing fault

Possible Causes

  1. 1.Clogged doser nozzle — urea crystallization blocking spray pattern
  2. 2.Weak DEF pump pressure — insufficient pressure to deliver commanded quantity
  3. 3.Frozen or restricted DEF lines — cold weather or blockage
  4. 4.DEF filter restriction — reducing pump output
  5. 5.Electrical control fault — pump or doser control circuit issue
  6. 6.Poor DEF quality — crystallization from contaminated fluid

Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence

AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.

6 steps locked behind Technician Mode
  • 1
Single Action Gate — DEF Quality & Level Check: Verify DEF quality with refractometer (~32.5%) and confirm adequate tank level. Poor quality DEF causes crystallization that clogs the doser nozzle.
  • 2
Binary Decision Gate — DEF Pump Pressure Test: Measure DEF pump pressure per OEM specification (typically 8–10 bar). Low pressure indicates pump wear, filter restriction, or supply line issue.
  • 3
Override Manager — Line Restriction Inspection: Inspect DEF supply and return lines for kinks, freezing, or blockage. Check DEF filter condition and replace if restricted.
  • 4
Safety Interceptor — Doser Nozzle Inspection: Inspect doser nozzle for crystallization deposits. Remove and inspect spray pattern if OEM procedure allows. Crystallized nozzles are a common cause of low dosing quantity.
  • 5
Resume Point — Doser Spray Pattern Test: Perform doser spray pattern test per OEM procedure if supported. Verify spray pattern is correct and quantity matches commanded value.
  • 6
Verification Loop — Post-Service Dosing Confirmation: After service, verify dosing quantity PIDs return to expected range and SCR efficiency improves.
  • 7
Repair Ledger Output — Doser Replacement Decision: Replace doser only after pump pressure, line integrity, and filter are proven good. Document all findings.

Repair Steps

4 steps locked
  • 1Replace DEF if quality is out of spec.
  • 2Replace DEF filter if restricted.
  • 3Repair or replace DEF pump if pressure is below spec.
  • 4Repair any DEF line restrictions or freeze damage.
  • 5Clean or replace doser nozzle if crystallization is found.
  • 6Replace doser assembly if spray pattern or quantity is confirmed low after supply is proven good.
