No-Start Decision Tree: Battery, Interlock, Fuel, Sync
No-start diagnosis on a modern electronic diesel is a sequenced process — not a parts lottery. Starters and pumps replaced before confirming RPM signal or interlocks is the most documented misdiagnosis pattern. The decision tree branches into power, interlock, sync, and fuel paths based on evidence at each gate.

Fault Overview
A diesel no-start complaint requires sequencing through four primary branches before any parts replacement: cranking power integrity, interlock and safety circuit status, crank/cam RPM signal presence, and fuel supply and rail pressure during cranking. Dead batteries, interlock open, no rail pressure, CKP failure, fuel aeration, and blown main power feeds are the primary causes. Random starter, pump, and ECM replacement without confirming RPM signal or interlocks is the most documented misdiagnosis pattern.
Engine & Platform Coverage
Possible Causes
- 1.Dead or low batteries — insufficient cranking voltage for ECM and starter
- 2.Interlock open — clutch, neutral, park, or safety interlock preventing start command
- 3.No RPM signal during cranking — CKP or CMP failure
- 4.No rail pressure during cranking — fuel supply failure, aeration, or pump failure
- 5.Fuel aeration — suction-side air ingestion preventing prime
- 6.Blown main power feed — ECM or fuel system power loss
Wiring & Circuit Notes
Battery cables and ECM power/ground circuits must be verified before any other diagnosis. An ECM that cannot maintain power during cranking will not produce a reliable RPM signal or fuel command. Interlock circuits must be verified with PIDs — do not assume interlock status from switch position alone.
DVOM Specs & Sensor Tests
Cranking voltage must remain above OEM minimum throughout the crank event — measure at the battery and at the ECM power supply simultaneously. RPM signal during cranking confirms CKP function — no RPM PID during cranking with healthy cranking voltage points to CKP or CMP. Rail pressure during cranking confirms fuel supply — no pressure buildup during cranking with RPM present points to fuel supply or pump.
Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence
AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.
5 steps locked behind Technician Mode- 1Verify cranking voltage — measure at battery and ECM supply during crank; must remain above OEM minimum
- 2Verify interlocks allow start — check clutch, neutral, park, and safety interlock PIDs
- 3Confirm RPM signal during cranking — no RPM with healthy voltage points to CKP/CMP branch
- 4Confirm rail pressure during cranking — no pressure with RPM present points to fuel supply branch
- 5Branch to sync diagnosis if no RPM: CKP/CMP circuit checks, sensor gap, reluctor wheel
- 6Branch to fuel diagnosis if no pressure: suction-side aeration, lift pump, filter restriction, HP pump

Summary
No-start diagnosis is a sequenced process: cranking power, interlock, RPM signal, then fuel pressure. Each gate must be confirmed before the next branch is entered.
