Overview

Fault Code

SPN 4076 / FMI 18

Category

Aftertreatment

Severity

High

Derate Risk

Yes

Regen Inhibit

Yes — active regen blocked

Inducement Risk

Yes — SCR inducement possible

Component Location: DEF doser/injector mounted on exhaust pipe upstream of SCR catalyst, typically between DPF outlet and SCR inlet on the aftertreatment assembly.

Common Symptoms

  • MIL/CEL illuminated, DEF warning lamp on, poor or no DEF dosing observed in datastream, elevated tailpipe NOx emissions, SCR inlet NOx not reducing across catalyst, ammonia storage dropping, white crystallization visible around doser or decomposition tube, possible ammonia smell from exhaust, progressive derate warnings on dash, engine power reduction, vehicle speed limited, potential engine shutdown warning after continued operation

Derate Behavior

Power Derate

Yes

Active Regen Inhibited

This fault prevents the DPF from completing an active regeneration cycle. DPF soot load will increase until the fault is resolved.

SCR Inducement Risk

If left unresolved, this fault may trigger SCR inducement — a progressive derate enforced by the ECM to ensure emissions compliance.

Mileage / Regen Notes

This fault INHIBITS active DPF regeneration. The aftertreatment system requires proper DEF dosing to manage SCR outlet temperatures and NOx conversion during regen. With low or no DEF flow, the ACM will block active regen requests to prevent SCR catalyst damage and uncontrolled NOx slip. Soot loading will continue to increase while this fault is active. If DPF soot level reaches critical threshold with regen inhibited, additional derates or forced parked regen may be required. Resolve DEF doser fault before attempting any regen procedure. After repair, may require manual regen command to clear elevated soot levels.

System Interactions

SPN 4076 FMI 18 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

DPF differential pressure monitoring — soot load calculations affected
SCR NOx conversion efficiency — DEF dosing strategy may be altered
Active regen inhibit logic — regen may be blocked or delayed
Engine protection derate — ECM may reduce power to protect components
TSB Reference: No confirmed TSB numbers — verify in OEM service portal. Common service bulletins exist for DEF doser crystallization issues on Cummins ISB/ISX and Detroit DD13/DD15 platforms. Check for TSBs related to DEF quality sensor cross-contamination causing false low flow readings. Freightliner/DTNA has released bulletins on DEF line routing causing kinks. Always search by VIN in OEM portal for applicable campaigns.

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.

Replacing the DPF without verifying the regen system is functional — a failed regen injector will reload the new DPF.

Ignoring DEF quality — contaminated DEF causes SCR efficiency faults that look like hardware failures.
