Component Location: DPF differential pressure sensor mounted on the aftertreatment assembly or frame rail. Two hoses connect sensor to DPF inlet and DPF outlet pressure taps. Sensor is typically located away from the DPF to reduce heat exposure.

Common Symptoms

  • DPF differential pressure critically high - DPF severely restricted
  • Engine derate active - ECM protecting engine from excessive backpressure
  • Active regeneration commanded but may not be reducing soot load
  • Exhaust backpressure high - possible exhaust restriction symptoms
  • Possible companion faults: SPN 3719 (soot load high), SPN 3031 (DPF inlet temp high)
  • DPF soot load percent at or above 100% in live data

Root Causes

  • DPF severely loaded with soot - regen not occurring or not completing
  • DPF loaded with ash - ash accumulation cannot be removed by regen (requires DPF cleaning)
  • DPF differential pressure sensor failure - reading high while actual pressure is normal
  • DPF differential pressure sensor hose blocked or disconnected - false high reading
  • DPF physically damaged or collapsed - restriction not related to soot or ash
  • Regen inhibit switch active - operator preventing regen, allowing soot to accumulate

Derate Behavior

Power Derate

Yes

Mileage / Regen Notes

DPF ash accumulation increases with mileage - cleaning required at OEM-specified intervals. Soot accumulation increases with frequent short trips, high idle time, or regen inhibit use.

System Interactions

SPN 3251 FMI 0 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

DPF differential pressure monitoring — soot load calculations affected
SCR NOx conversion efficiency — DEF dosing strategy may be altered
Active regen inhibit logic — regen may be blocked or delayed
Engine protection derate — ECM may reduce power to protect components

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.

Replacing the DPF without verifying the regen system is functional — a failed regen injector will reload the new DPF.

Ignoring DEF quality — contaminated DEF causes SCR efficiency faults that look like hardware failures.

OEM Notes

Cummins

X15: DPF ash cleaning interval is 300,000 miles on X15. If differential pressure remains high after regen, check ash load. INSITE DPF regen test required.

Detroit

DD15: DPF differential pressure sensor hose blockage is common on DD15 - soot accumulates in hoses over time. Inspect and clean hoses before replacing sensor.

PACCAR

MX-13: DPF ash cleaning interval is 250,000 miles on MX-13. DAVIE4 DPF pressure report required. Check regen inhibit switch - operators frequently leave switch active.

Volvo

MP8: DPF differential pressure sensor is sensitive to moisture - check sensor connector for water intrusion. PTT DPF test required.
