Power Derate
Yes
Active Regen Inhibited
This fault prevents the DPF from completing an active regeneration cycle. DPF soot load will increase until the fault is resolved.
SCR Inducement Risk
If left unresolved, this fault may trigger SCR inducement — a progressive derate enforced by the ECM to ensure emissions compliance.
Mileage / Regen Notes
This fault indicates soot has accumulated to a maintenance-level threshold. The ECM will aggressively request active regens and may force parked regen requirement. Active regen will NOT be inhibited by this code alone — the system is trying to clean the DPF. However, if other regen inhibit conditions exist (temp sensor faults, doser faults, DEF faults), those will block regen and soot will continue to climb toward critical levels. A successful parked regen should clear this fault and reset soot load to normal levels. If parked regen is repeatedly requested or fails, investigate root cause preventing passive/active regen completion.
SPN 3936 FMI 16 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.
Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.
Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.
Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.
Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.
Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.
Replacing the DPF without verifying the regen system is functional — a failed regen injector will reload the new DPF.
Ignoring DEF quality — contaminated DEF causes SCR efficiency faults that look like hardware failures.
