Yes — SCR inducement possible

Component Location: The DEF quality sensor is mounted directly into the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) tank — typically on the top or side of the DEF tank via a threaded bung. On most Class 8 trucks, the DEF tank is located on the driver-side frame rail, behind the cab, forward of the rear axle (often near the fuel tank or mounted separately on the frame). The sensor probe extends down into the DEF fluid inside the tank. On some configurations, the DEF quality sensor is integrated into the same sending unit assembly as the DEF level sensor and DEF temperature sensor (a multi-function module mounted to the tank). Location varies by OEM and vehicle body manufacturer — on some vocational trucks, the DEF tank may be mounted on the passenger side or behind the cab in a different position. Always physically locate the DEF tank on the specific vehicle before attempting sensor removal. The DEF quality sensor connector is typically accessible from above or the side of the tank. Based on: general DEF system architecture across multiple platforms, technician field reports, and OEM service documentation patterns. Verify specific location for the vehicle at hand.

Common Symptoms

  • MIL lamp illuminated, DEF warning lamp on, reduced engine power, vehicle speed limited (often to 50 mph, then 25 mph, then 5 mph in progressive stages), poor NOx conversion efficiency, white/ammonia smell from exhaust if DEF is over-concentrated, SCR efficiency codes may accompany, engine may enter forced idle or shutdown after extended operation, driver may report DEF gauge reading erratically or showing empty with full tank

Derate Behavior

Power Derate

Yes

Active Regen Inhibited

This fault prevents the DPF from completing an active regeneration cycle. DPF soot load will increase until the fault is resolved.

SCR Inducement Risk

If left unresolved, this fault may trigger SCR inducement — a progressive derate enforced by the ECM to ensure emissions compliance.

Mileage / Regen Notes

Very common. Always test DEF quality first — cheap and fast.

System Interactions

SPN 3364 FMI 18 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

DPF differential pressure monitoring — soot load calculations affected
SCR NOx conversion efficiency — DEF dosing strategy may be altered
Active regen inhibit logic — regen may be blocked or delayed
Engine protection derate — ECM may reduce power to protect components
TSB Reference: No confirmed universal TSB numbers — verify in OEM service portal. Cummins has issued multiple service letters regarding DEF quality and contamination diagnosis. Detroit Diesel has bulletins addressing DD13/DD15 DEF quality sensor diagnostics. Paccar has DEF system service information for MX engines. Always check for current calibration updates for ACM/DCU that may adjust quality thresholds.

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.

Replacing the DPF without verifying the regen system is functional — a failed regen injector will reload the new DPF.

Ignoring DEF quality — contaminated DEF causes SCR efficiency faults that look like hardware failures.
