Component Location: DPF differential pressure sensor is mounted on or near the DPF canister in the aftertreatment system, typically on the exhaust tunnel or frame rail under the vehicle.

Common Symptoms

  • Check engine light illuminated. MIL lamp on. Possible yellow engine warning light. No or inaccurate DPF soot load reading on scan tool. DPF differential pressure reading stuck at 0 or minimum value. Regen intervals may become erratic or extended. Possible white smoke if regens are not completing properly. Scan tool may show DPF pressure sensor voltage below 0.5V or at 0V.

Mileage / Regen Notes

Active regeneration may be inhibited or will not initiate while this fault is active on some ECM calibrations. Without accurate differential pressure data, the ECM cannot reliably calculate DPF soot load, which may prevent automatic or commanded regens. Some systems will default to a timer-based regen strategy, which can lead to incomplete regens or over-regeneration. Parked regen (service regen) may still be possible via scan tool but should only be performed after verifying the fault cause — do not perform regen if soot load is unknown or sensor data is unreliable. Clear fault and verify sensor operation before commanding any manual regen.

System Interactions

SPN 3251 FMI 4 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

DPF differential pressure monitoring — soot load calculations affected
SCR NOx conversion efficiency — DEF dosing strategy may be altered
Active regen inhibit logic — regen may be blocked or delayed
Engine protection derate — ECM may reduce power to protect components
TSB Reference: No confirmed universal TSBs — verify in OEM service portal for specific engine platform. Cummins ISB/ISL: Check for service letters regarding aftertreatment harness routing and chafe points. Detroit DD13/DD15: Check for PIs related to delta-P sensor connector sealing. Paccar MX: Review any bulletins on aftertreatment sensor harness updates. Always check for applicable harness repair kits or updated connector seals.

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.

Replacing the DPF without verifying the regen system is functional — a failed regen injector will reload the new DPF.

Ignoring DEF quality — contaminated DEF causes SCR efficiency faults that look like hardware failures.
