Component Location: The outlet NOx sensor (SPN 3226) is located downstream of the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalyst — it measures NOx after the urea/DEF reaction has occurred. Physical location varies by OEM and vehicle configuration: - Cummins ISX15 / X15: Typically mounted in the exhaust outlet pipe exiting the SCR catalyst, which is usually part of the aftertreatment assembly on the right side of the engine or the vehicle frame rail. On chassis-mounted aftertreatment systems, the SCR outlet is often near the DPF/SCR module at the back of the engine or mid-chassis. - Detroit DD15 / DD13: The SCR outlet NOx sensor is located at the tailpipe-side outlet of the SCR module in the single-module aftertreatment assembly, typically mounted on the right-side frame rail behind the cab or in the engine tunnel area on Class 8 trucks. - PACCAR MX-13: Similar to above — sensor located at the exit of the SCR catalyst within the aftertreatment module. IMPORTANT: Do not confuse the outlet NOx sensor (after SCR) with the inlet NOx sensor (before SCR, after turbo/DPF). The outlet sensor is the one closer to the tailpipe. The connector and harness typically route back toward the ECM/ACM along the frame rail or firewall. Exact mounting location varies by chassis OEM (Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, International, Volvo, Mack) — verify against the specific vehicle's aftertreatment layout. Based on: OEM aftertreatment system architecture documentation + technician field experience across multiple platforms.

Common Symptoms

  • Check engine light illuminated. MIL lamp on. Possible yellow engine warning lamp. Reduced engine power or torque derate in some cases. Erratic or pegged-high NOx readings on scan tool (may show max value like 3000+ ppm). SCR efficiency codes may follow if left unaddressed. Possible increased DEF consumption if ECM is compensating based on faulty signal. Truck may enter inducement warning stage on some platforms if combined with other aftertreatment faults.

Mileage / Regen Notes

This fault typically does NOT inhibit active regeneration directly. The outlet NOx sensor is primarily used for SCR efficiency monitoring rather than regen control. However, if the ECM cannot accurately calculate SCR performance, it may delay or modify regen strategy. On some platforms, extended operation with this code can trigger secondary SCR efficiency faults which MAY inhibit regen. Always verify DPF soot load and ash levels — a truck that has been ignoring regens due to stacked faults may need a parked regen or forced regen once repairs are complete.

System Interactions

SPN 3226 FMI 3 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

DPF differential pressure monitoring — soot load calculations affected
SCR NOx conversion efficiency — DEF dosing strategy may be altered
Active regen inhibit logic — regen may be blocked or delayed
Engine protection derate — ECM may reduce power to protect components

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.

Replacing the DPF without verifying the regen system is functional — a failed regen injector will reload the new DPF.

Ignoring DEF quality — contaminated DEF causes SCR efficiency faults that look like hardware failures.
