Component Location: The intake NOx sensor (also called the upstream or pre-SCR NOx sensor) is mounted in the exhaust stream upstream of the SCR catalyst, typically after the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and before the DEF injection point. Physical mounting location varies by OEM and chassis configuration: on most Class 8 trucks, it is located on the aftertreatment assembly mounted on the frame rail (commonly driver or passenger side depending on OEM), on the inlet pipe or inlet face of the SCR housing. On some configurations it may be mounted on a mid-pipe section between the DPF outlet and the SCR inlet. The sensor body is externally similar to a bung-mounted oxygen sensor but with a multi-pin electrical connector (typically 4–6 pins depending on OEM). NOTE: Exact mounting location varies significantly by OEM and vehicle configuration (frame-mounted aftertreatment vs. cab-behind-engine). Always identify the specific aftertreatment layout on the vehicle before locating the sensor. The NOx sensor heater and ECU module (sometimes a separate control unit mounted near the sensor) may also be present. Based on: general industry aftertreatment layout knowledge, Cummins/Detroit/PACCAR platform documentation, and field technician descriptions.

Common Symptoms

  • Check engine light illuminated. MIL lamp on. Possible 5 MPH speed derate after extended time with active fault. Erratic or pegged-high NOx readings on scan tool (often 3000+ ppm or maxed out). May see related SCR efficiency codes if fault persists. Possible ammonia smell from excessive DEF dosing if ECM misinterprets high NOx reading. DEF consumption may be abnormally high.

System Interactions

SPN 3216 FMI 3 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

DPF differential pressure monitoring — soot load calculations affected
SCR NOx conversion efficiency — DEF dosing strategy may be altered
Active regen inhibit logic — regen may be blocked or delayed
Engine protection derate — ECM may reduce power to protect components
TSB Reference: No confirmed TSBs specific to this SPN/FMI — verify in OEM service portal. Cummins has issued general NOx sensor harness bulletins addressing chafing near exhaust routing. Detroit Diesel has released service letters on NOx sensor connector water intrusion. Check OEM system for current applicable campaigns.

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.

Replacing the DPF without verifying the regen system is functional — a failed regen injector will reload the new DPF.

Ignoring DEF quality — contaminated DEF causes SCR efficiency faults that look like hardware failures.
