SPN 4094 FMI 31 — DEF Quality Condition Exists
DEF quality conditions are fluid diagnoses before parts replacement. Bulk DEF contamination, roadside bad fills, and sensor replaced before fluid proof are the most documented patterns. The FSM enforces a mandatory chemistry-first gate.

Fault Overview
SPN 4094 FMI 31 indicates a DEF quality condition is present — concentration or quality rationality has failed. Diluted or contaminated DEF, wrong fluid, failed quality sensor, header wiring issues, and stratified tank after poor refill are the primary causes. Bulk DEF contamination, roadside bad fills, and sensor replaced before fluid proof are documented patterns. Replacing the quality sensor before proving fluid chemistry is the most documented misdiagnosis pattern.

Symptoms
- •DEF quality condition
- •Bad DEF code
- •Quality inducement warning
- •Contaminated DEF fault
- •Sensor replaced before fluid proof
Possible Causes
- 1.Diluted or contaminated DEF — diluted or contaminated DEF producing below-specification concentration
- 2.Wrong fluid — wrong fluid in DEF tank producing quality fault
- 3.Failed quality sensor — failed quality sensor producing false quality fault
- 4.Header wiring issues — header wiring issues producing quality sensor fault
- 5.Stratified tank after poor refill — stratified tank after poor refill producing inconsistent quality reading
Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence
AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.
3 steps locked behind Technician Mode- 1Step 1 — Sample Mid-Tank and Refractometer Check: Sample the DEF mid-tank and check with a refractometer. DEF concentration should be approximately 32.5% urea. Bulk DEF contamination and roadside bad fills are documented causes. A refractometer reading outside specification confirms a fluid quality fault.
- 2Step 2 — Inspect Contamination: Inspect for contamination. Inspect the DEF tank for signs of contamination — discoloration, odor, or visible debris. A contaminated tank requires drain, flush, and refill with fresh OEM-specification DEF.
- 3Step 3 — Drain and Refill If Failed: Drain and refill if fluid quality has failed. Drain the DEF tank completely. Flush the tank if contamination is present. Refill with fresh OEM-specification DEF. Inspect the DEF filter and replace if contaminated.
- 4Step 4 — Sensor or Circuit Tests Only If Chemistry Is Proven Good: Perform sensor or circuit tests only if chemistry is proven good. Electrical sensor checks are only valid after fluid chemistry is confirmed within specification. Quality sensor connector corrosion from urea crystals is a documented cause. Inspect the quality sensor and header connector for corrosion after fluid proof.

Repair Steps
2 steps locked- 1Drain, flush, and refill with fresh OEM-specification DEF if quality is failed.
- 2Replace DEF filter if contaminated.
- 3Repair quality sensor connector if corrosion is confirmed.
- 4Replace quality sensor if failure is confirmed after fluid proof.
