SPN 102 FMI 18 — Intake Manifold Pressure (Boost) Below Normal
SPN 102 FMI 18 means actual boost pressure is below the expected value for the commanded conditions. Underboost is more often caused by intake leaks or a failed VGT actuator than a 'bad turbo.' Prove the air path and actuator before ordering a turbocharger assembly.

Fault Overview
The MAP sensor (SPN 102) measures intake manifold pressure (boost). FMI 18 (below normal) is set when actual boost falls below the calibrated target under valid speed and load conditions. This fault causes power loss, black smoke, and accelerated DPF soot loading. The most common causes are charge pipe leaks, intercooler boot splits, and VGT actuator carbon buildup — all of which are far less expensive than a turbocharger replacement.
Engine & Platform Coverage
Symptoms
- •Underboost warning or derate active
- •Low turbo pressure on scan tool
- •No power under load
- •Black smoke under acceleration
- •Boost derate limiting power
- •Accelerated DPF soot loading
Possible Causes
- 1.Charge pipe leak — split boot, loose clamp, or cracked pipe
- 2.Intercooler (CAC) leak — internal or external
- 3.Failed VGT actuator — carbon buildup preventing vane movement
- 4.Stuck VGT vanes — soot accumulation in turbine housing
- 5.MAP sensor bias — sensor reading low without actual underboost
- 6.Exhaust leak upstream of turbo — reducing drive energy
- 7.Dirty compressor wheel — reducing efficiency
Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence
AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.
6 steps locked behind Technician Mode- 1Single Action Gate — Commanded vs Actual Boost: Compare commanded boost target to actual MAP reading on scan tool. Large gap confirms underboost. Small gap may indicate sensor bias.
- 2Binary Decision Gate — Intake Smoke Test: Perform a smoke test on the intake system from the air filter to the intake manifold. Any leak found here is the most common and cheapest fix.
- 3Override Manager — VGT Actuator Inspection: Command VGT actuator movement with scan tool (KOEO or KOER per OEM). Verify actuator responds and vanes move through full range. Carbon buildup is common.
- 4Safety Interceptor — Exhaust Leak Check: Inspect exhaust system upstream of the turbocharger for leaks. Exhaust leaks reduce drive energy to the turbine and cause underboost.
- 5Resume Point — MAP Sensor Supply & Signal: Verify 5V reference, ground, and signal circuit on MAP sensor. KOEO baseline should reflect atmospheric pressure. No response to boost indicates sensor/harness issue.
- 6Verification Loop — Turbo Mechanical Inspection: Inspect turbocharger for shaft play, compressor wheel damage, and oil contamination only after leaks and actuator are proven good.
- 7Repair Ledger Output — Turbo Replacement Decision: Replace turbocharger assembly only with evidence of mechanical failure. Turbo jobs typically $1,500–$5,000+.
