Fix SPN 3251 FMI 0 — DPF Differential Pressure Critical
Forced regen, ash cleaning, and DPF replacement decision guide
Overview
SPN 3251 FMI 0 indicates the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) differential pressure is critically high — the filter is severely loaded with soot or ash. This fault triggers a derate and requires immediate action to prevent DPF damage.
Safety Warnings
- ⚠Do not perform a forced regen if the truck is parked near flammable materials — exhaust temperatures exceed 600°C during regen.
- ⚠Allow exhaust system to cool before inspecting DPF components.
- ⚠Wear heat-resistant gloves when working near aftertreatment.
Step-by-Step Repair
Read DPF differential pressure and soot loading
Connect OEM diagnostic software and read DPF differential pressure and soot loading percentage. Differential pressure >10 kPa at idle indicates high soot loading. Soot loading >100% requires immediate regen.
Attempt forced regen
If soot loading is high and no regen inhibit conditions are active, perform a forced regen using OEM diagnostic software. The truck must be stationary, engine at operating temperature, and no active faults that inhibit regen.
Monitor regen progress
During forced regen, monitor DPF inlet temperature, DPF outlet temperature, and differential pressure. Differential pressure should drop as soot burns off. A successful regen reduces differential pressure to <3 kPa.
Check for ash loading if regen does not reduce pressure
If differential pressure remains high after a successful regen, the DPF is ash-loaded. Ash cannot be burned off — the DPF requires cleaning or replacement. Check DPF ash loading percentage in OEM software.
Inspect DPF differential pressure sensor and hoses
If differential pressure reading is high but the DPF appears clean, check the differential pressure sensor and hoses. Plugged hoses or a failed sensor can cause false high readings.
Replace or clean DPF if ash-loaded
If ash loading is confirmed, the DPF must be cleaned (pneumatic cleaning service) or replaced. Ash cleaning is typically required every 300k–400k miles.
Verification Checklist
- DPF differential pressure below 3 kPa at idle after regen
- DPF soot loading below 50% after regen
- No active fault codes after regen
- Regen frequency returned to normal (every 300–500 miles)
