Component Location: Engine cooling fan speed sensor is typically located on the fan hub assembly or fan drive mechanism near the front of the engine.

Common Symptoms

  • Fan runs at full speed constantly regardless of engine temperature. Fan does not respond to A/C request or manual override commands. MIL or engine warning lamp illuminated. Possible excessive fan noise complaints from driver. HVAC performance complaints due to fan not engaging when commanded. Scan tool shows fan speed sensor voltage pegged high or out of range.

Derate Behavior

Mileage / Regen Notes

This fault typically does not directly inhibit active DPF regeneration. However, if the ECM cannot accurately read fan speed, it may default the fan to full speed or fail to command proper fan operation during regen. In some calibrations, loss of reliable fan speed feedback may prevent the ECM from managing coolant temps properly during parked regen, potentially causing regen to abort if temps go out of range. Monitor for secondary faults during regen attempts.

System Interactions

SPN 641 FMI 3 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

TSB Reference: No confirmed TSBs — verify in OEM service portal. Check for manufacturer-specific bulletins related to fan speed sensor wiring routing and connector sealing issues, particularly on applications with front-mounted cooling packages.

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.
