Component Location: J1939 CAN bus backbone runs longitudinally along the chassis frame, with drop connectors to each module; the diagnostic 9-pin connector is typically located under the dash or on the firewall.

Common Symptoms

  • Multiple ghost fault codes appearing and disappearing across various modules. Intermittent communication loss with ECM, transmission, ABS, or instrument cluster. Erratic gauge behavior including speedometer, tachometer, or fuel gauge fluctuations. Check engine light flickering or multiple warning lamps illuminating simultaneously. Loss of cruise control functionality. Intermittent no-start or random stalling. Scan tool unable to communicate with one or more modules or losing connection during diagnostics. Transmission shifting erratically or stuck in limp mode. ABS/traction control warnings appearing without actual system faults.

Mileage / Regen Notes

Active DPF regeneration is typically inhibited while SPN 639 FMI 2 is active. The aftertreatment system relies on J1939 communication between the ECM, ACM (Aftertreatment Control Module), and DOC/DPF temperature sensors. Erratic network data prevents the system from confirming safe regen conditions. Parked regen requests may also be denied. Once CAN communication is restored and the fault clears, normal regen functionality should resume. Extended operation with this fault active may lead to elevated soot loading and eventual derate for DPF soot level.

System Interactions

SPN 639 FMI 2 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

TSB Reference: No confirmed universal TSBs — this is a generic J1939 network fault. Check OEM-specific service portals: Cummins QuickServe for engine-related bulletins, Freightliner ServiceLink, Kenworth/Peterbilt TruckTech, International OnCommand. Common areas addressed in OEM bulletins include dash connector corrosion, chassis harness chafe points at frame rails, and aftermarket device interference. Verify current TSBs in manufacturer service portal for specific chassis and engine combination.

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.
