Component Location: J1939 CAN network spans the entire vehicle with modules connected via twisted pair data bus wiring and terminating resistors at each end.

Common Symptoms

  • Loss of communication with one or more ECUs on the J1939 network. Cluster gauges may be erratic, dead, or display incorrect values. Multiple ghost fault codes appearing across different modules simultaneously. Intermittent no-start or hard-start conditions. ABS, transmission, or engine warning lights illuminated together. Scan tool unable to communicate with some or all modules. Intermittent limp mode or unexpected derate. Vehicle may run fine then suddenly lose all dash communication. Aftertreatment system may show communication faults with DEF dosing unit or DOC/DPF sensors.

Mileage / Regen Notes

Active regeneration is typically INHIBITED when this fault is active. The aftertreatment system requires communication between the engine ECM, aftertreatment control module (ACM/DCU), and various temperature/pressure sensors over J1939. Loss of CAN communication prevents the ECM from receiving accurate soot load calculations, exhaust temps, and DEF dosing feedback needed to safely initiate and monitor a regen. Parked regen will also likely be blocked. The system may command a forced regen once communication is restored and codes are cleared, especially if soot load accumulated during the fault period. Always verify CAN communication is fully restored and stable before attempting any regen procedure.

System Interactions

SPN 639 FMI 14 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

TSB Reference: No confirmed universal TSBs — this is a generic J1939 network fault. Check OEM-specific service portals: Cummins QuickServe for engine-side CAN issues, PACCAR PremierCare for Kenworth/Peterbilt chassis harness bulletins, Freightliner ServiceLink for Cascadia CAN backbone routing updates. Navistar has issued multiple bulletins on CAN terminator locations for International trucks. Verify in applicable OEM service portal for your specific chassis and engine combination.

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.
