Component Location: J1939 CAN bus runs throughout the vehicle - from ECM to transmission controller, ABS controller, body controller, instrument cluster, and all other networked modules. J1939 diagnostic connector (9-pin Deutsch) is typically located under the dash or on the firewall.

Common Symptoms

  • Multiple fault codes active across multiple systems simultaneously
  • Scan tool cannot communicate with one or more ECMs
  • Dash warning lamps for multiple systems illuminated at once
  • Engine derate active - ECM cannot receive data from other modules
  • Transmission, ABS, or body controller faults active alongside engine faults
  • Intermittent fault - sets and clears with vibration or temperature changes

Root Causes

  • J1939 CAN bus wiring fault - open circuit, short to ground, or short to voltage on CAN-H or CAN-L
  • Missing or incorrect CAN termination resistor - 120-ohm resistors at each end of CAN bus
  • Failed ECM or module pulling CAN bus low - one module failure affects entire network
  • Corroded or damaged CAN bus connector - common at ECM connectors or inline connectors
  • CAN bus shield grounding issue - shield not properly grounded causing noise
  • Aftermarket device improperly connected to J1939 diagnostic port

Derate Behavior

Power Derate

Yes

Active Regen Inhibited

This fault prevents the DPF from completing an active regeneration cycle. DPF soot load will increase until the fault is resolved.

Mileage / Regen Notes

CAN bus wiring damage increases with mileage and vibration. Connector corrosion increases with age and road exposure.

System Interactions

SPN 625 FMI 9 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

TSB Reference: Cummins TSB 4021801 - J1939 Data Link Diagnosis; Detroit TSB 17-003 - CAN Bus Communication Fault Diagnosis

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.

OEM Notes

Cummins

X15: J1939 CAN bus fault often causes cascade of faults across all systems. INSITE J1939 network test required. Check ECM connector pins for corrosion - common failure point.

Detroit

DD15: CAN bus termination resistor failure is common on high-mileage DD15 trucks. DDDL network analysis required. Check inline CAN connectors in chassis harness.

PACCAR

MX-13: Aftermarket GPS or telematics devices improperly connected to J1939 port are a common cause of CAN bus issues. Disconnect all aftermarket devices before diagnosis.

Volvo

MP8: CAN bus wiring harness routing near the firewall is a common chafe point on Volvo trucks. PTT network test required.
