Component Location: DPF is located in the aftertreatment assembly mounted on frame rail, typically on right side behind cab, downstream of DOC.

Common Symptoms

  • Frequent regens (more than normal intervals), DPF warning lamp illuminated, check engine light on, reduced fuel economy, elevated exhaust backpressure readings, possible white or black smoke during regen attempts, engine may feel sluggish under load, driver complaints of excessive downtime for parked regens

Derate Behavior

Mileage / Regen Notes

This fault typically triggers more frequent active regen requests as the ECM attempts to reduce soot load. If soot load remains critically high, the system may inhibit further driving regens and require a parked (stationary) regen to be performed. In some calibrations, if soot load exceeds a critical threshold (often 120-150%), active regens may be locked out entirely until a service regen is completed with a diagnostic tool. Monitor for companion codes related to regen inhibit conditions.

System Interactions

SPN 3936 FMI 18 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

TSB Reference: Cummins X15 DPF TSB

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.
