Component Location: DPF differential pressure sensor mounts on the aftertreatment module, typically on frame rail behind cab, with tubes connected to DPF inlet and outlet.

Common Symptoms

  • MIL lamp illuminated. DPF warning light on. Active regeneration not initiating or aborting mid-cycle. Erratic or illogical soot load readings on scan tool (showing full when recently regenerated, or empty when overdue). Poor fuel economy. Possible reduced power complaint. Scan tool shows DPF differential pressure reading that doesn't match exhaust flow conditions (too high at idle, too low under load, or stuck at one value).

Derate Behavior

Mileage / Regen Notes

This fault typically inhibits active DPF regeneration. The ECM relies on differential pressure data to calculate soot load and determine when regen is needed. With implausible data, the system cannot accurately assess DPF condition, so it will block active regen as a protective measure. Parked regen may also be unavailable until the fault is resolved. Prolonged operation can lead to excessive soot accumulation and eventual forced derate for DPF protection.

System Interactions

SPN 3251 FMI 20 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

TSB Reference: Exhaust leak TSBs

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.
