Component Location: DPF differential pressure sensor is mounted on the aftertreatment module or frame rail, connected to inlet and outlet ports on the DPF canister via rubber or silicone tubes.

Common Symptoms

  • Low or zero differential pressure reading on scan tool even under load. DPF pressure readings do not change during acceleration or regen attempts. Possible MIL illuminated. Regen requests may not initiate properly. Soot load calculations may be inaccurate, showing lower than actual soot levels. Engine may run normally otherwise but aftertreatment system monitoring is compromised.

Derate Behavior

Mileage / Regen Notes

This fault can inhibit active regeneration. The ECM/ACM relies on differential pressure to calculate soot load and monitor regen effectiveness. With a low or stuck reading, the system may not recognize the need for regen or may not be able to verify regen completion. Some systems will block active regen requests until the sensor fault is resolved. Parked regen may also be inhibited depending on OEM calibration. Soot load modeling becomes unreliable, risking DPF damage from uncontrolled soot accumulation.

System Interactions

SPN 3251 FMI 15 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

TSB Reference: Sensor wiring TSBs

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.
