Component Location: EGR system components are located on the engine — EGR valve typically on exhaust/intake manifold crossover, EGR cooler mounted to engine block or intake manifold, accessible from engine top or side.

Common Symptoms

  • Active DTC with MIL or CEL illuminated
  • Excessive NOx emissions detected
  • Black or excessive exhaust smoke under load
  • Engine derate or reduced power mode active
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Rough idle or unstable engine operation
  • Failed emissions inspection
  • Elevated EGR valve and cooler temperatures

Root Causes

  • EGR valve stuck open or closed due to carbon buildup EGR cooler internal leak or restricted flow EGR differential pressure sensor failure or clogged sensing ports EGR mass flow rate below commanded target (system not flowing enough recirculated gas) Intake or exhaust leak affecting EGR system pressure balance EGR valve actuator failure (electric or pneumatic) Clogged EGR passages or crossover pipe from carbon accumulation Faulty EGR position sensor providing incorrect feedback Turbocharger issue causing insufficient exhaust backpressure to drive EGR flow Software/calibration mismatch — ECM commanded vs. actual EGR rate deviation

Mileage / Regen Notes

SPN 2413 FMI 0 (EGR System Performance — data valid but above normal range) will typically inhibit active DPF regeneration. Elevated EGR flow or a stuck-open EGR valve reduces combustion temperatures, preventing DPF regen completion. ECM may lock out forced regen until EGR system fault is resolved. Passive regen is also impaired under high EGR flow conditions. This fault must be cleared and EGR system restored to normal operation before regen can proceed.

System Interactions

SPN 2413 FMI 0 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.
