Component Location: DEF tank level sensor is located inside the DEF tank, accessed through the header/sender assembly on top of the tank, typically mounted on frame rail.

Common Symptoms

  • DEF tank gauge reads full constantly regardless of actual fluid level. MIL/CEL illuminated. DEF warning lamp may be on. Dash display may show DEF level stuck at 100% or erratic readings. Possible inducement warnings on dash. System may not recognize DEF refill events. Driver complaints of inaccurate DEF level readings.

Derate Behavior

Mileage / Regen Notes

This fault typically does not directly inhibit active DPF regeneration. The DEF level sensor is part of the SCR dosing system, not the DPF regen control loop. However, if the system cannot confirm adequate DEF level, it may limit or suspend DEF dosing which can lead to elevated NOx and trigger separate SCR efficiency codes. Regen should proceed normally unless additional aftertreatment faults are present.

System Interactions

SPN 1761 FMI 3 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

TSB Reference: No confirmed TSBs — verify in OEM service portal. Common service bulletins exist for DEF tank header connector corrosion on Cummins/Freightliner platforms and DEF sender unit failures on Detroit DD13/DD15. Check OEM-specific portals (Freightliner ServiceLink, Cummins QuickServe, Detroit DCS) for current bulletins related to DEF tank level sensor circuits.

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.
