Component Location: DEF tank level sensor is mounted inside the DEF tank, typically accessed through a sender unit on top of the tank located on frame rail behind cab.

Common Symptoms

  • Erratic DEF level reading on dash gauge (jumping up/down unexpectedly). DEF level gauge not matching actual tank level. MIL or DEF warning lamp illuminated. Possible false low DEF warnings despite full tank. Driver complaints of level reading changing rapidly while parked. Level reading may spike or drop suddenly during normal driving. May see related DEF quality or system faults stored.

Derate Behavior

Mileage / Regen Notes

This fault typically does not directly inhibit DPF regeneration. Active and parked regens should still be allowed. However, if the abnormal rate of change causes the system to calculate a false empty or critically low DEF level, the ACM may restrict SCR operation which could indirectly affect aftertreatment temps and regen efficiency. Monitor SCR inlet temps during regen if this fault is present.

System Interactions

SPN 1761 FMI 10 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

TSB Reference: No confirmed universal TSBs — verify in OEM service portal for specific chassis. Cummins, Detroit, and Paccar have issued DEF tank sensor-related service letters; search by SPN 1761 in OEM system. Check for any DEF tank header recall campaigns on specific model years.

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.
