Component Location: TCM is typically mounted on or near the transmission body, or in the cab chassis electrical area depending on OEM; connected via J1939 CAN backbone.

Common Symptoms

  • Transmission stuck in limp mode or fixed gear
  • No gear selection response from shifter
  • Transmission warning lamp illuminated on dash
  • ABS or stability control faults co-occurring due to shared datalink
  • Speedometer or RPM gauge erratic or inoperative
  • Engine derate or no-start condition in some configurations

Root Causes

  • Loss of battery or ignition power supply to the TCM
  • Corroded or loose TCM ground connection
  • Faulty or damaged J1939 CAN bus wiring (open, short, or high resistance)
  • Defective CAN bus terminating resistor (120 ohm)
  • Damaged or corroded TCM connector pins or harness connector
  • Failed or damaged TCM module
  • J1939 backbone bus short to ground or power
  • Defective engine ECM or backbone node preventing CAN communication

Mileage / Regen Notes

Loss of TCM communication will typically inhibit active DPF regeneration as the aftertreatment controller requires transmission gear and vehicle speed data from the TCM to authorize and safely complete a regen cycle. Parked regen may also be disabled.

System Interactions

SPN 113 FMI 0 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.
