Component Location: Intake manifold pressure sensor is mounted directly on the intake manifold, typically on the top or side of the manifold near the turbocharger outlet.

Common Symptoms

  • Check engine light illuminated
  • Boost pressure reading stuck high or erratic on dash
  • Engine derate or reduced power
  • Poor throttle response
  • Black or excessive exhaust smoke under load
  • Turbocharger over-boost or under-boost conditions
  • Engine may go into limp mode

Root Causes

  • Short to voltage on the MAP sensor signal wire causing current above normal
  • Failed intake manifold pressure sensor with internal short
  • Chafed or damaged wiring harness causing signal wire to contact power wire or chassis
  • Corroded or moisture-contaminated sensor connector
  • Faulty ECM/ECU output driver (rare)
  • Incorrect sensor installed (wrong range or part number)

Full step-by-step tests, DVOM guidance, and pinout data are available inside the AI Diesel Tech diagnostic session.

Mileage / Regen Notes

SPN 102 FMI 6 typically inhibits active DPF regeneration because accurate boost/intake pressure is required to control regen fueling and exhaust temperatures safely. Regen may be suspended until fault is resolved.

System Interactions

SPN 102 FMI 6 interacts with the following systems and may trigger cascading faults if not resolved promptly.

TSB Reference: Boost sensor TSB

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

Replacing the sensor without verifying wiring continuity and supply voltage first.

Clearing codes without identifying and resolving the root cause — the fault will return.

Ignoring related active faults — cascading faults often share a root cause.

Skipping the connector inspection — corrosion and damaged pins are a leading cause of sensor faults.

Condemning the ECM before exhausting all wiring and component tests.
