SPN 102 FMI 1 — Intake Manifold Pressure Below Normal (Underboost)

SPN 102 FMI 1 — Intake Manifold Pressure Below Normal (Underboost)

Underboost is a measured leak-and-response diagnosis. Fuel-system parts replaced for charge-air leaks is the most documented misdiagnosis on this fault class.

Fault Overview

SPN 102 FMI 1 indicates MAP or boost pressure is below the calibrated minimum or significantly below desired. Charge-air leaks, actuator faults, turbo wear, inlet restriction, and sensor bias low are the primary causes. KOEO MAP baseline validation, desired versus actual boost graphing, and charge-air leak testing are required before any turbo replacement.

Engine & Platform Coverage

MAP-sensed turbo diesels — all major platforms

Symptoms

  • •Underboost code active
  • •Low boost under load on scan tool
  • •Black smoke from underboost condition
  • •Power loss under load
  • •Charge-air boot split or clamp loose

Possible Causes

  1. 1.Charge-air leaks — split boots, failed clamps, CAC leaks
  2. 2.Actuator faults — not responding to closed-vane command
  3. 3.Turbo wear with reduced compressor efficiency
  4. 4.Inlet restriction reducing compressor inlet pressure
  5. 5.MAP sensor bias low producing false underboost reading

Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence

AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.

4 steps locked behind Technician Mode
  • 1
Step 1 — MAP Proof and KOEO Baseline: Verify MAP sensor accuracy. KOEO MAP should read near atmospheric pressure. An invalid baseline invalidates all boost graphing that follows.
  • 2
Step 2 — Graph Desired vs Actual Boost Under Load: Graph desired boost versus actual boost under load. A large gap between desired and actual confirms a real underboost condition and guides the leak test and actuator checks.
  • 3
Step 3 — Charge-Air Leak Test: Perform a smoke or regulated pressure leak test on the charge-air system. Charge-air leaks are the most common cause of underboost and are found quickly with a proper leak test.
  • 4
Step 4 — Actuator Checks: Command the actuator to the closed-vane position and observe actual position response. An actuator that does not respond to closed-vane command will produce underboost even with an intact charge-air system.
  • 5
Step 5 — Turbo Last: Proceed to turbo replacement only after leaks are repaired, actuator response is confirmed, and the desired-versus-actual gap remains.

Repair Steps

3 steps locked
  • 1Repair charge-air leaks — boots, clamps, CAC.
  • 2Replace or repair actuator after non-response is confirmed.
  • 3Service inlet restriction if contributing.
  • 4Replace MAP sensor after bias low is confirmed.
  • 5Replace turbo only after leak and actuator proof is complete and gap remains.
