Detroit DD15 DPF Differential Pressure Sensor Replacement

The DD15 DPF differential pressure sensor measures pressure drop across the DPF filter to determine soot load and trigger regeneration. A failed or stuck sensor causes missed regeneration events, false DPF full faults, and unnecessary DPF cleaning. Before replacing the sensor, always inspect the pressure tubes for blockage or kinks — a plugged pressure tube is a common cause of false DPF pressure readings and is far cheaper to fix than a new sensor.

Safety — Read Before Starting

  • •Allow the exhaust system to cool completely before working near the DPF — exhaust temperatures can exceed 1,200°F during regeneration.
  • •Wear heat-resistant gloves when working near the exhaust system.
  • •Do not perform this repair immediately after a regeneration event — allow at least 2 hours for the DPF to cool.
  • •Wear safety glasses when working with compressed air.

Step-by-Step Procedure

1

Read DPF differential pressure live data using Detroit Diesel DiagnosticLink (DDDL).

At idle, DPF differential pressure should be 0.5–2.0 kPa on a clean filter. A reading of 0 kPa with the engine running suggests a plugged pressure tube or failed sensor.

2

Inspect both pressure tubes (upstream and downstream of DPF) for kinks, cracks, or blockage.

Blow compressed air through each tube to verify it is clear. A plugged tube is the most common cause of false DPF pressure readings — replace the tube before replacing the sensor.

3

Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.

Use a connector pick tool. Do not pry with a screwdriver.

4

Disconnect both pressure tubes from the sensor. Label upstream and downstream tubes to prevent mix-up.

Upstream tube connects to the DPF inlet (high pressure side). Downstream tube connects to the DPF outlet (low pressure side). Mixing them up causes inverted pressure readings.

5

Remove the sensor mounting bolts or unthread the sensor (if threaded type).

Apply penetrating oil if the sensor is seized in the housing.

6

Install the new sensor with a new gasket (if bracket-mounted) or new O-ring (if threaded).

Do not reuse the old gasket or O-ring. Lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil.

7

Torque the sensor mounting bolts or sensor body to specification.

Do not over-torque — the sensor housing is plastic on some configurations.

8

Reconnect both pressure tubes. Verify upstream and downstream connections are correct.

Use new O-rings on pressure tube fittings. Torque tube fittings to specification.

9

Reconnect the sensor electrical connector. Verify connector is fully seated and locked.

A partially seated connector is a common cause of sensor faults after replacement.

10

Clear all fault codes using DDDL. Start the engine and verify DPF differential pressure live data.

At idle, DPF differential pressure should be 0.5–2.0 kPa on a clean filter. If pressure reads 0 kPa, recheck pressure tube connections.

11

Perform a short road test and monitor DPF differential pressure under load.

Under load, DPF differential pressure should increase proportionally with engine load. A flat reading under load suggests a pressure tube issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes false DPF pressure readings on the DD15?

The most common cause of false DPF pressure readings is a plugged or kinked pressure tube, not a failed sensor. Always inspect and blow out the pressure tubes before replacing the sensor.

What is the torque spec for the DD15 DPF pressure sensor?

DD15 DPF pressure sensor mounting bolts torque to 9 ft-lbs (12 Nm) with a new gasket. Pressure tube fittings torque to 9 ft-lbs (12 Nm) with new O-rings.

What fault codes are related to DD15 DPF pressure sensor issues?

Common related fault codes include SPN 3719 FMI 0 (DPF pressure above normal), SPN 3719 FMI 2 (DPF pressure erratic), and SPN 3719 FMI 15 (DPF pressure above normal — moderate).

How long does DD15 DPF pressure sensor replacement take?

DD15 DPF pressure sensor replacement typically takes 30–60 minutes, including pressure tube inspection and post-replacement verification.

What is normal DPF differential pressure on the DD15?

At idle, normal DPF differential pressure is 0.5–2.0 kPa on a clean filter. Pressure increases proportionally with engine load and soot loading.
