SPN 2659 FMI 18 — EGR Mass Flow Below Normal

Medium Severity

SPN 2659 FMI 18 — EGR Mass Flow Below Normal

SPN 2659 FMI 18 means calculated or measured EGR flow is below the expected value. This is a control-and-restriction diagnosis — validate the sensors used in the flow calculation before condemning the valve or cooler.

Fault Overview

EGR flow is calculated by the ECM using inputs from MAP, MAF, delta-P sensors (depending on strategy), and valve position feedback. FMI 18 (below normal) is set when the calculated flow falls below the calibrated minimum. Plugged EGR coolers and carboned valves are common causes, but sensor bias in the flow calculation inputs can create false low-flow faults without any actual restriction.

Engine & Platform Coverage

Cummins ISX / X15Detroit DD13 / DD15PACCAR MX-11 / MX-13Volvo D11 / D13Mack MP7 / MP8Most EGR-equipped on-highway diesels

Symptoms

  • •EGR flow low fault active
  • •Insufficient EGR warning
  • •NOx increase with EGR codes
  • •Power changes with EGR disabled
  • •Increased DPF soot loading

Possible Causes

  1. 1.EGR valve not opening — carbon sticktion or actuator failure
  2. 2.Plugged EGR cooler — restriction reducing flow
  3. 3.Intake leakage path errors — affecting flow calculation
  4. 4.MAP/MAF/delta-P sensor bias — skewing flow calculation inputs
  5. 5.EGR cooler bypass stuck — reducing cooled EGR flow

Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence

AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.

6 steps locked behind Technician Mode
  • 1
Single Action Gate — Commanded vs Actual Position: Compare commanded EGR valve position to actual position feedback. If valve is commanded open but not moving, the restriction is mechanical.
  • 2
Binary Decision Gate — Flow Calculation Input Validation: Validate the sensors used in the EGR flow calculation (MAP, MAF, delta-P per OEM strategy). Sensor bias in these inputs creates false low-flow faults.
  • 3
Override Manager — EGR Cooler Restriction Inspection: Inspect EGR cooler for restriction. A plugged cooler reduces flow regardless of valve position. Measure pressure drop across cooler per OEM procedure.
  • 4
Safety Interceptor — Intake Integrity Check: Verify intake system integrity. Leaks in the intake path affect the flow calculation and can create false low-flow readings.
  • 5
Resume Point — Delta-P / Flow PID Review: Review EGR delta-P or flow PID data under load. Compare to expected values for the operating conditions.
  • 6
Verification Loop — Post-Service Flow Confirmation: After valve or cooler service, verify EGR flow PIDs return to expected range under load.
  • 7
Repair Ledger Output — Cooler Replacement Decision: Replace EGR cooler only after valve and sensor inputs are proven good. Document all findings.

Repair Steps

3 steps locked
  • 1Clean EGR valve if carbon sticktion is found.
  • 2Replace EGR actuator if valve is not responding to commands.
  • 3Service or replace EGR cooler if restriction is confirmed.
  • 4Correct any sensor bias found in flow calculation inputs.
  • 5Repair intake leaks that affect flow calculation.
