SPN 975 FMI 4 — Engine Fan Drive Circuit Voltage Below Normal
Fan drive low-voltage codes need short isolation before another fan assembly is installed. Repeat fan clutch failures when harness rub-through is never repaired is the most documented pattern on this fault class.

Fault Overview
SPN 975 FMI 4 indicates the fan drive control circuit voltage is below the valid minimum — the shorted or low-signal class. Control wire short to ground, failed fan coil or actuator short, crushed loom in the cooling package, and moisture bridging at connectors are the primary causes. Short isolation is required before any fan drive replacement.

Symptoms
- •Fan fuse blows repeatedly
- •Fan circuit short to ground confirmed
- •SPN 975 FMI 4 active
- •Fan drive replaced without resolving the fault
- •Harness damage visible near radiator support or fan shroud
Possible Causes
- 1.Control wire short to ground in the fan circuit
- 2.Failed fan coil or actuator — internal short
- 3.Crushed loom in the cooling package near the radiator
- 4.Moisture bridging at fan connectors after wash or water intrusion
- 5.Insulation damage from fan shroud abrasion
Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence
AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.
4 steps locked behind Technician Mode- 1Step 1 — Disconnect Fan Load: Disconnect the fan drive assembly from the harness. This isolates the fan drive from the circuit and allows the harness to be tested independently.
- 2Step 2 — Measure Component Resistance: Measure coil or actuator resistance at the fan drive connector. Low resistance below OEM specification supports an internal short in the fan drive assembly.
- 3Step 3 — Short-Check the Harness: With the fan drive disconnected, measure resistance from the control wire to ground. A short to ground in the harness with the fan disconnected confirms a harness fault, not a fan drive fault.
- 4Step 4 — Inspect Radiator-Support Pinch Points and Shroud Abrasion: Physically inspect the fan control harness at radiator-support pinch points, fan shroud abrasion zones, and wet connector locations. Rub-through and moisture intrusion are the most common causes of repeat fan circuit shorts.
- 5Step 5 — Repair Circuit Before New Fan Drive: Repair the harness short before installing a new fan drive. Installing a new fan drive into an unrepaired short circuit will destroy the replacement unit.

Repair Steps
2 steps locked- 1Repair harness short at identified rub-through or pinch point.
- 2Seal moisture-damaged connector at fan circuit connection point.
- 3Replace fan drive assembly after internal short is confirmed with fan disconnected.
- 4Reroute harness away from abrasion points after repair.

Summary
SPN 975 FMI 4 is a short-circuit fan control path fault. Isolate the short to the harness or the fan drive before any replacement to prevent repeat failures.
