SPN 5571 FMI 0 — High Pressure Common Rail Fuel Pressure Relief / Control Above Normal

SPN 5571 FMI 0 — High Pressure Common Rail Fuel Pressure Relief / Control Above Normal

Rail overpressure class faults need sensing and control proof before pump replacement. Contamination events causing control valve sticking and false highs from sensor circuit opens are the most documented patterns. The FSM separates false from true overpressure before any high-cost hardware decisions.

Fault Overview

SPN 5571 FMI 0 is a rail pressure relief or control above normal or overpressure protection class fault depending on OEM mapping. Stuck pressure control valve, restricted return, sensor bias high, control logic issues, and debris after contamination events are the primary causes. Contamination events causing control valve sticking and false highs from sensor circuit opens on some systems are documented patterns. Replacing the HP pump for a sensor or control valve fault is the most documented and most expensive misdiagnosis pattern.

Engine & Platform Coverage

HPCR systems with relief valves or control valves and high-pressure monitoring

Symptoms

  • •Rail pressure too high
  • •Fuel pressure relief active
  • •Overpressure rail diesel
  • •P0088 equivalent HD
  • •Derate from overpressure protection

Possible Causes

  1. 1.Stuck pressure control valve — stuck pressure control valve producing above-normal rail pressure
  2. 2.Restricted return — restricted return path producing above-normal rail pressure
  3. 3.Sensor bias high — FRP sensor bias high producing false overpressure reading
  4. 4.Control logic issues — control logic fault producing above-normal pressure command
  5. 5.Debris after contamination — debris after contamination event causing control valve sticking

Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence

AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.

4 steps locked behind Technician Mode
  • 1
Step 1 — Sensor Circuit Proof: Validate the FRP sensor electrically and against desired and actual response before condemning pump or relief components. A false high from a sensor circuit open on some systems produces an overpressure fault without true overpressure. Verify FRP sensor reference voltage, ground, and signal circuit integrity.
  • 2
Step 2 — Desired vs Actual Pressure: Compare desired and actual rail pressure. A desired pressure that is within specification with an actual pressure that is above specification confirms a control or mechanical fault. A desired pressure that is above specification confirms a control logic or command fault.
  • 3
Step 3 — Return-Path Inspection: Inspect the return path. A restricted return path producing above-normal rail pressure requires return-path service. Inspect return lines, fittings, and the return restriction for blockage.
  • 4
Step 4 — Control Valve Tests: Test the pressure control valve. A stuck pressure control valve producing above-normal rail pressure requires control valve service or replacement. Contamination events causing control valve sticking are a documented cause — inspect for debris after any contamination event.
  • 5
Step 5 — Pump and Relief Diagnosis Only With Evidence: Perform pump and relief diagnosis only with evidence. Confirm sensor, return path, and control valve integrity before any HP pump or relief valve assessment. An HP pump replaced without evidence may replace a good pump into a control or sensor fault ($1,500–$6,000+).

Repair Steps

2 steps locked
  • 1Repair FRP sensor circuit if sensor fault is confirmed.
  • 2Service return path if restriction is confirmed.
  • 3Service or replace control valve if sticking is confirmed.
  • 4Replace HP pump or relief valve only with confirmed evidence.
