SPN 3251 FMI 2 — DPF Differential Pressure Data Erratic

SPN 3251 FMI 2 — DPF Differential Pressure Data Erratic

Erratic delta-P is almost always hoses, moisture, or sensor circuit integrity. Water in sense lines causing cold-start spikes and heat-damaged hoses are the most documented patterns. The FSM enforces plumbing-plus-electrical gate to prevent endless sensor swaps.

Fault Overview

SPN 3251 FMI 2 indicates DPF delta-P signal unstable or implausible. Failing sensor, moisture or soot in hoses, intermittent 5V or ground, cracked sense lines, and connector fretting are the primary causes. Water in sense lines causing cold-start spikes and heat-damaged hoses are documented patterns. Replacing the DP sensor without inspecting the hoses and ports first is the most documented misdiagnosis pattern.

Symptoms

  • •DPF pressure sensor intermittent
  • •Delta-P jumping
  • •Erratic backpressure reading
  • •Regen based on bad DP
  • •Cold-start delta-P spikes

Possible Causes

  1. 1.Failing sensor — failing DP sensor producing unstable signal
  2. 2.Moisture or soot in hoses — moisture or soot in sense hoses producing unstable readings
  3. 3.Intermittent 5V or ground — intermittent reference voltage or ground producing unstable sensor signal
  4. 4.Cracked sense lines — cracked sense lines producing air intrusion and unstable readings
  5. 5.Connector fretting — connector fretting producing intermittent sensor signal

Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence

4 steps locked behind Technician Mode
  • 1
Step 1 — Inspect and Clean Hoses and Ports: Inspect and clean the DP sense hoses and ports. Water in sense lines causing cold-start spikes is a documented pattern. Inspect the hoses for moisture, soot, and damage. Inspect the ports on the DPF for plugging and debris. Clean or replace hoses and clear ports if moisture, soot, or plugging is found.
  • 2
Step 2 — Electrical Reference and Ground Checks: Check the electrical reference voltage and ground at the DP sensor connector. An intermittent 5V or ground producing unstable sensor signal requires circuit repair. Verify reference voltage stability and ground integrity.
  • 3
Step 3 — Graph Delta-P: Graph the delta-P signal. A KOEO baseline should be stable near zero. A loaded response should be smooth, not spiking randomly. Spikes at cold start suggest moisture in sense lines. Random spikes at operating temperature suggest sensor or circuit integrity faults.
  • 4
Step 4 — Replace Sensor After Proof: Replace the sensor after proof of sensor failure. Confirm hoses, ports, and circuit integrity before sensor replacement. A sensor replaced without proof may be replaced into a hose or circuit fault that will produce the same erratic readings.
  • 5
Step 5 — Verify After Repair: Verify delta-P readings are stable after repair. Confirm SPN 3251 FMI 2 does not return. Monitor for return of erratic delta-P events over extended operation.
