SPN 175 FMI 0 — Engine Oil Temperature Above Normal

Medium–High Severity

SPN 175 FMI 0 — Engine Oil Temperature Above Normal

High oil temperature is cooler efficiency, level, and sensing diagnosis. Oil cooler replaced for a shorted or biased sensor — and the opposite error of ignoring a truly restricted cooler — are both documented misdiagnoses.

Fault Overview

SPN 175 FMI 0 indicates engine oil temperature is above the calibrated maximum. Failed oil cooler efficiency, restricted cooler flow, low oil level, sensor bias high, extreme load or ambient conditions, and cooling-package debris are the primary causes. True high oil temperatures usually track heavy load and inadequate cooling — extreme offset between oil temp and ECT supports a sensor fault.

Oil-temp-sensed electronic diesels — HD/MD/LD

Possible Causes

  1. 1.Failed oil cooler efficiency from scale or debris restriction
  2. 2.Restricted cooler flow from contamination or scale buildup
  3. 3.Low oil level reducing heat-transfer capacity
  4. 4.Oil temp sensor bias high producing false overtemp readings
  5. 5.Extreme load or ambient conditions exceeding cooler capacity
  6. 6.Cooling-package debris reducing airflow to oil cooler

Wiring & Circuit Notes

Correlate oil temperature with ECT — an extreme offset between the two supports a sensor fault. True high oil temperatures usually track heavy load and inadequate cooling. Inspect the cooling package for debris before any cooler conclusions.

DVOM Specs & Sensor Tests

Compare oil temp PID to ECT PID. An extreme offset with normal ECT and normal operating conditions supports sensor bias. True highs track heavy load and inadequate cooling — both sensors rise together. Check oil level and condition. Inspect cooling-package airflow. Evaluate cooler flow and restriction only after sensor correlation and level checks are complete.

  • 1
Correlate oil temp PID with ECT — extreme offset supports sensor bias
  • 2
    Check oil level and condition
  • 3
Inspect cooling-package airflow — clean debris from cooler faces
  • 4
Evaluate cooler flow and restriction if correlation and level checks are normal
  • 5
Replace oil temp sensor only if bias is proven
  • 6
Service or replace oil cooler only with restriction evidence after all preceding steps
