SPN 168 FMI 2 — Battery Potential Data Erratic

SPN 168 FMI 2 — Battery Potential Data Erratic

Erratic system voltage is a connection and charging-control diagnosis. Intermittent no-comm and random codes from unstable voltage rather than failed modules is the most documented pattern. The FSM enforces voltage stability process to prevent module shotgunning.

Fault Overview

SPN 168 FMI 2 indicates system voltage reading unstable or implausible. Loose battery terminals, failing alternator regulator, intermittent grounds, high-resistance cables, and parasitic load cycling are the primary causes. Intermittent no-comm and random codes from unstable voltage rather than failed modules is a documented pattern. Replacing modules for random codes without stabilizing the power supply is the most documented misdiagnosis pattern.

Symptoms

  • •Battery voltage intermittent
  • •System voltage fluctuating
  • •Intermittent low voltage warnings
  • •Random module resets
  • •Intermittent no-comm from unstable voltage

Possible Causes

  1. 1.Loose battery terminals — loose battery terminals producing unstable voltage
  2. 2.Failing alternator regulator — failing alternator regulator producing unstable charging voltage
  3. 3.Intermittent grounds — intermittent grounds producing unstable voltage
  4. 4.High-resistance cables — high-resistance cables producing voltage drop under load
  5. 5.Parasitic load cycling — parasitic load cycling producing unstable key-off voltage

Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence

AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.

3 steps locked behind Technician Mode
  • 1
Step 1 — Terminal Cleanliness and Torque: Check terminal cleanliness and torque. Loose battery terminals producing unstable voltage is the most common cause. Inspect and clean all battery terminals, main grounds, alternator B+ connections, and ECM ground studs. Torque all connections to specification.
  • 2
Step 2 — Loaded Voltage-Drop Positive and Negative: Perform loaded voltage-drop tests on positive and negative circuits. Graph system voltage under load. Abrupt collapses under load point to resistance or poor connections. High-resistance cables producing voltage drop under load require cable or connection repair.
  • 3
Step 3 — Alternator Regulation Test: Test alternator regulation. A regulation swing pointing to alternator control confirms an alternator or regulator fault. Verify alternator output voltage and regulation stability under load.
  • 4
Step 4 — Parasitic Draw If Key-Off Instability Suspected: Check parasitic draw if key-off instability is suspected. A parasitic load cycling producing unstable key-off voltage requires parasitic draw diagnosis. Measure key-off current draw and identify the source if excessive.

Repair Steps

3 steps locked
  • 1Clean and torque battery terminals and main grounds if loose connections are confirmed.
  • 2Replace cables if high resistance is confirmed.
  • 3Replace alternator or regulator if regulation fault is confirmed.
  • 4Repair battery pack if failure is confirmed.
  • 5Address parasitic draw source if excessive key-off draw is confirmed.
