SPN 132 FMI 0 — Intake Manifold Pressure Above Normal (Severe Overboost)

High Severity

SPN 132 FMI 0 — Intake Manifold Pressure Above Normal (Severe Overboost)

Severe overboost is sensing and actuator response diagnosis before turbo replacement. Turbo replaced for a failed actuator or biased MAP sensor is the most documented misdiagnosis on this fault class.

Fault Overview

SPN 132 FMI 0 indicates intake manifold pressure is above the severe maximum threshold — the severe overboost protection class. Stuck VGT vanes closed, actuator control failure, wastegate issues where equipped, MAP sensor bias high, ice or binding in cold conditions, and oil supply issues to the actuator on some designs are the primary causes. MAP sensor proof and actuator command-response correlation are required before any turbo replacement.

Engine & Platform Coverage

Turbo diesels with MAP-based overboost protection — Cummins, Detroit, PACCAR, Volvo/Mack, International

Symptoms

  • •Severe overboost derate active
  • •Boost pressure above maximum on scan tool
  • •Turbo replaced without resolving overboost condition
  • •MAP reading high with actuator at open-vane command
  • •Overboost event in cold conditions

Possible Causes

  1. 1.Stuck VGT vanes closed — carbon or mechanical binding
  2. 2.Actuator control failure — not responding to open-vane command
  3. 3.Wastegate failure in closed position where equipped
  4. 4.MAP sensor bias high producing false overboost reading
  5. 5.Ice or binding in cold conditions on VGT mechanism
  6. 6.Oil supply issues to the actuator on oil-controlled designs

Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence

4 steps locked behind Technician Mode
  • 1
Step 1 — MAP Sensor Proof: Verify MAP sensor accuracy. KOEO MAP should read near atmospheric pressure. A MAP sensor biased high will produce a false overboost reading without actual mechanical overboost. Compare MAP to a known-good reference if available.
  • 2
Step 2 — Desired vs Actual Boost Correlation: Graph desired boost versus actual boost under load. If actual boost tracks desired boost and both are high, the actuator is responding but the system is genuinely overboost. If actual is high while desired is low, the actuator is not responding to the open-vane command.
  • 3
Step 3 — Actuator Command and Response: Command the actuator to the open-vane position with a scan tool and observe actual position response. An actuator that does not respond to open-vane command is the most common cause of genuine overboost on VGT systems.
  • 4
Step 4 — Mechanical Freedom Check: Inspect the VGT mechanism for binding, carbon packing, or ice in cold conditions. Mechanical binding can prevent the actuator from opening the vanes even with correct electrical command.
  • 5
Step 5 — Turbo Path Only With Evidence: Proceed to turbo replacement only after MAP sensor is proven accurate, actuator is proven to respond correctly, and mechanical binding is confirmed as the cause. Turbo replacement on an unresolved actuator or sensor fault produces repeat overboost events.

Repair Steps

3 steps locked
  • 1Replace MAP sensor after bias high is confirmed.
  • 2Replace or repair actuator after non-response to open-vane command is confirmed.
  • 3Service wastegate mechanism if stuck closed where equipped.
  • 4Address oil supply issues to actuator on applicable designs.
  • 5Replace turbo assembly only after geometry seizure is confirmed as the cause.
