SPN 1209 FMI 4 — Exhaust Pressure Circuit Voltage Below Normal
Exhaust pressure low-voltage codes need short isolation before path decisions. False low backpressure masking a real restriction, or false strategy behavior from shorted data, is the most documented consequence.

Fault Overview
SPN 1209 FMI 4 indicates the exhaust pressure sensor circuit voltage is below the normal minimum — a short circuit or low-signal class fault. Signal short to ground, failed sensor with internal short, crushed harness near AT or engine harness transitions, moisture bridging, and a shorted companion sensor on the shared 5V supply collapsing the bus are the primary causes.
Engine & Platform Coverage
Possible Causes
- 1.Signal wire short to ground at pinch points near AT or engine harness transitions
- 2.Failed exhaust pressure sensor with internal short to ground
- 3.Crushed harness at AT or engine harness transition points
- 4.Moisture bridging at connector body near exhaust plumbing
- 5.Shorted companion sensor on shared 5V supply collapsing the reference bus
Wiring & Circuit Notes
Check 5V bus voltage with all sensors connected — a collapsed bus indicates a short on the shared reference. Inspect pinch points and shared reference branches near AT and engine harness transitions. Disconnect sensors one at a time to identify the short source if the bus is collapsed.
DVOM Specs & Sensor Tests
Measure 5V reference bus voltage with all sensors connected. If the bus is collapsed, disconnect sensors one at a time and recheck bus voltage after each disconnection. With the exhaust pressure sensor disconnected, check the signal wire for short to ground independently. Rebuild exhaust pressure restriction diagnosis with valid data after circuit is proven.
