SPN 112 FMI 1 — Coolant Level Critically Low
Critical low coolant is an immediate engine-protection issue first. Drivers continuing after low-coolant warnings until critical protection sets is the most documented pattern. The FSM forces safe thermal state and physical proof before continued operation advice.

Fault Overview
SPN 112 FMI 1 indicates coolant level at the critical low threshold. The ECM protection strategy may limit power or warn aggressively. Major external leaks, hose failures, radiator leaks, internal leaks, continued operation after earlier low-level warnings, and rare false sensor critical events are the primary causes. Drivers continuing after low-coolant warnings until critical protection sets is a documented pattern. Continuing loaded operation with confirmed critical low coolant risks catastrophic engine damage.

Symptoms
- •Critical low coolant
- •Coolant empty warning
- •Engine protection low coolant
- •Overheat risk from low coolant
- •Power derate from critical low coolant
Possible Causes
- 1.Major external leak — major external leak producing rapid coolant loss
- 2.Hose failure — hose failure producing rapid coolant loss
- 3.Radiator leak — radiator leak producing coolant loss
- 4.Internal leak — internal leak producing coolant loss without external evidence
- 5.Continued operation after earlier warnings — continued operation after low-level warnings until critical protection sets
- 6.Rare false sensor critical — rare false sensor critical event with full tank
Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence
AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.
6 steps locked behind Technician Mode- 1Step 1 — Safe Cooldown: Allow safe cooldown before any inspection. Do not open the cooling system on a hot engine. Allow the engine to cool to a safe temperature before any coolant system inspection.
- 2Step 2 — Physical Level Verification: Verify physical coolant level. Visual and physical proof dominates. Inspect the surge tank and radiator for actual coolant level. A confirmed critical low coolant level requires leak diagnosis.
- 3Step 3 — Pressure Test If Low: Perform a pressure test if coolant is confirmed low. A pressure test identifies external leaks. Pressurize the cooling system and inspect for leaks at hoses, radiator, clamps, and fittings.
- 4Step 4 — Identify Leak Source: Identify the leak source. Major external leaks, hose failures, and radiator leaks are the most common causes. An internal leak with no external evidence requires further diagnosis including combustion gas testing.
- 5Step 5 — Sensor Path Only for False-Critical Cases: Evaluate the sensor path only for false-critical cases where the tank is visibly full. A rare false sensor critical event with a full tank requires sensor circuit diagnosis. Do not evaluate the sensor path before physical level proof.
- 6Step 6 — Repair and Refill: Repair the identified leak source and refill with OEM-specification coolant. Do not return to service until the leak is repaired and the coolant level is restored.
- 7Step 7 — Verify After Repair: Verify cooling system integrity after repair. Confirm SPN 112 FMI 1 does not return. Monitor for return of low coolant events over extended operation.

Repair Steps
2 steps locked- 1Repair hose, radiator, or clamp if external leak is confirmed.
- 2Address internal leak if no external leak is found.
- 3Repair sensor circuit if false-critical event with full tank is confirmed.
- 4Refill with OEM-specification coolant after repair.
