SPN 100 FMI 0 — Engine Oil Pressure Above Normal

Medium Severity

SPN 100 FMI 0 — Engine Oil Pressure Above Normal

High oil pressure is sender bias versus true relief or path diagnosis. Filter and housing work performed for a biased high sender is the most documented misdiagnosis.

Fault Overview

SPN 100 FMI 0 indicates oil pressure is above the calibrated maximum on platforms that monitor overpressure. Stuck relief valve, incorrect oil viscosity too thick, restricted gallery or filter path, sender bias high, and extreme cold thick oil are the primary causes. Electrical peg without high gauge pressure is sender or circuit — mechanical gauge confirmation is required before any lubrication-path teardown.

Engine & Platform Coverage

Systems with oil overpressure monitoring or equivalent sender range faults mapped high — HD/MD/LD

Possible Causes

  1. 1.Stuck oil pressure relief valve
  2. 2.Incorrect oil viscosity — too thick for operating temperature
  3. 3.Restricted gallery or filter path
  4. 4.Oil pressure sender bias high producing false overpressure readings
  5. 5.Extreme cold thick oil before warm-up

Wiring & Circuit Notes

Sender high-signal faults can fake overpressure. Mechanical gauge confirmation is required before any lubrication-path teardown — electrical peg without high gauge pressure is sender or circuit.

DVOM Specs & Sensor Tests

Install a mechanical gauge and compare to PID. If gauge is normal and PID is high, diagnose the sender and circuit. If gauge confirms high pressure, diagnose the relief valve, oil viscosity, and filter or gallery path. Document readings at cold start, hot idle, and loaded rpm. Sustained true overpressure can stress seals and cooler systems.
