PTO Switch / Enable Circuit Voltage Above Normal
High voltage on the PTO enable circuit is usually a short to power or aftermarket wiring error. Isolate the switch and inspect body-builder circuits.

Fault Overview
Voltage above normal on the PTO switch or enable circuit. The ECM detects high voltage inconsistent with the expected switch state, preventing or incorrectly allowing PTO engagement.
Engine & Platform Coverage
Symptoms
- •PTO switch high voltage
- •PTO won't engage
- •PTO enable circuit fault
- •Power take-off switch code
Possible Causes
- 1.PTO switch shorted to power
- 2.Wiring short to battery
- 3.Incorrect switch installed
- 4.Aftermarket PTO control wiring errors
- 5.ECM input fault
Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence
AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.
5 steps locked behind Technician Mode- 1Step 1 — Monitor PTO Enable Status vs Switch Position: Monitor PTO enable status in live data while operating the switch. Confirm whether the reported state matches the actual switch position.
- 2Step 2 — Measure Voltage on Signal Circuit in Both States: Measure voltage on the signal circuit in both the off and on positions. Battery voltage present in the off position confirms a short to power.
- 3Step 3 — Disconnect Switch and Recheck for Voltage Presence: Disconnect the switch and measure voltage on the signal wire. Voltage present with the switch disconnected confirms the short is in the harness, not the switch.
- 4Step 4 — Inspect Aftermarket and Body-Builder Wiring: Inspect all aftermarket and body-builder wiring tied into the PTO circuit. Aftermarket body-builder wiring is the most frequent source of high-voltage faults on PTO circuits.
- 5Step 5 — Verify Related Interlocks: Verify neutral, park, and brake interlocks are in the required state for PTO operation.
- 6Step 6 — Confirm ECM Input Integrity: Confirm ECM input integrity only after wiring and switch are proven good.
