P0506 — Idle Air Control System RPM Lower Than Expected

P0506 — Idle Air Control System RPM Lower Than Expected

P0506 sets when actual idle speed is lower than the target idle speed by a calibrated amount. Cleaning and relearn before throttle-body replacement solves the majority of P0506 cases. On electronic throttle systems, a relearn is almost always required after cleaning.

Fault Overview

Dirty throttle body, carbon buildup, vacuum leaks, failing electronic throttle body, incorrect idle learn, binding throttle plate, low fuel pressure at idle, and excessive engine load (A/C, power steering) are the primary causes. Disable A/C and other loads during diagnosis.

Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence

AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.

5 steps locked behind Technician Mode
  • 1
Step 1 — Record Target vs Actual Idle Speed: Record target vs actual idle speed on the scan tool. Confirm the idle is below target.
  • 2
Step 2 — Clean the Throttle Body: Clean the throttle body thoroughly with throttle-body cleaner.
  • 3
Step 3 — Perform the OEM Idle Relearn Procedure: Perform the OEM idle relearn procedure after cleaning. On electronic throttle systems, this is almost always required.
  • 4
Step 4 — Check for Vacuum Leaks: Check for vacuum leaks that become more apparent at idle.
  • 5
Step 5 — Verify Throttle Position Sensor and APP Signals: Verify throttle position sensor and accelerator pedal position sensor signals.
  • 6
Step 6 — Evaluate Fuel Pressure at Idle if Needed: Evaluate fuel pressure at idle if all other causes have been eliminated.
