P0500 — Vehicle Speed Sensor A
P0500 sets when the ECM detects a missing or erratic vehicle speed signal from the VSS or ABS module. Many modern vehicles no longer have a dedicated VSS — speed comes from the ABS module via the network. Check for related ABS codes and determine the speed source before replacing any sensor.

Fault Overview
Failed VSS, damaged tone ring, wiring open/short, ABS module issues, incorrect tire size programming, and poor connection are the primary causes. ABS codes often accompany P0500 when wheel-speed sensors are the source.

Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence
AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.
5 steps locked behind Technician Mode- 1Step 1 — Monitor Vehicle Speed Data While Driving: Monitor vehicle speed data on the scan tool while driving.
- 2Step 2 — Compare with Actual Speed (GPS): Compare scan tool speed with actual speed using GPS.
- 3Step 3 — Check for Related ABS Codes: Check for related ABS wheel-speed sensor codes.
- 4Step 4 — Inspect Dedicated VSS or Wheel-Speed Sensors and Tone Rings: Inspect the dedicated VSS or ABS wheel-speed sensors and tone rings for damage.
- 5Step 5 — Verify Wiring and Network Communication: Verify wiring and network communication if speed is ABS-derived.
- 6Step 6 — Correct Programming or Replace the Failed Sensor: Correct tire size programming or replace the failed sensor as indicated.
