P0191 — Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P0191 indicates the FRP sensor signal is out of expected range or does not correlate with commanded pressure and engine operating conditions. Reference and ground verification plus mechanical correlation prevent unnecessary sensor replacement.

Fault Overview
Failed or drifting FRP sensor, poor 5 V reference or ground, intermittent signal wiring, actual pressure fluctuations from pump or control issues, and contamination at the sensor port are the primary causes. Oil or fuel intrusion into the connector is common on some platforms. A sensor that tracks but is offset will set P0191.

- •fuel rail pressure sensor performance
- •FRP range performance
- •P0191 diesel
- •rail pressure sensor rationality
Possible Causes
- 1.Failed or drifting FRP sensor
- 2.Poor 5 V reference or ground
- 3.Intermittent signal wiring
- 4.Actual pressure fluctuations from pump or control issues
- 5.Contamination at sensor port
Wiring & Circuit Notes
Thorough inspection of FRP sensor connector, 5 V reference, signal, and ground. Check for shared reference problems with other sensors.
DVOM Specs & Sensor Tests
KOEO voltage should correspond to residual pressure. Live voltage vs actual pressure. Reference must be stable 5 V. Ground voltage drop less than 0.1 V.
Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence
AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.
5 steps locked behind Technician Mode- 1Step 1 — Record KOEO and Live FRP Voltage: Record FRP sensor voltage at key-on engine off and live under varying load conditions.
- 2Step 2 — Compare to Mechanical Pressure if Possible: Compare scan-tool FRP reading to a mechanical gauge at the rail or test port if available.
- 3Step 3 — Measure 5 V Reference and Ground: Measure the 5 V reference at the sensor connector. Verify ground voltage drop is less than 0.1 V.
- 4Step 4 — Wiggle-Test Harness While Watching Live Data: Wiggle-test the harness and connector while watching live FRP data for intermittent drops or spikes.
- 5Step 5 — Inspect Sensor Port for Debris: Inspect the sensor port for debris or contamination that could affect the sensing element.
- 6Step 6 — Replace Sensor Only After Circuit Proof: Replace the FRP sensor only after the reference, ground, and wiring are proven good.
