P0121 — Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

P0121 — Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

P0121 sets when the throttle position sensor (TPS) or accelerator pedal position (APP) signal is out of the expected range or does not correlate with other sensors. Graph both APP sensors (if dual) — they should track smoothly and stay within a small percentage of each other. Clean the throttle body and perform the idle/throttle relearn before replacing sensors. A binding throttle plate can set performance codes even if the sensor is good.

Fault Overview

Failed TPS or APP sensor, poor correlation between APP sensors on dual-sensor systems, wiring issues, dirty throttle body causing binding, incorrect throttle relearn, and PCM software issues are the primary causes. After sensor or throttle-body replacement, the relearn procedure is mandatory on most vehicles.

5 steps locked behind Technician Mode
  • 1
Step 1 — Graph TPS/APP Voltage Through Full Pedal Travel: Graph TPS/APP voltage while slowly depressing the pedal through full travel. Look for smooth transition and no dropouts.
  • 2
Step 2 — Check Correlation on Dual-Sensor Systems: On dual APP sensor systems, verify both sensors track smoothly and stay within the calibrated percentage of each other.
  • 3
Step 3 — Clean the Throttle Body: Clean the throttle body with approved cleaner.
  • 4
Step 4 — Perform the OEM Relearn Procedure: Perform the OEM idle/throttle relearn procedure. This is mandatory after cleaning.
  • 5
Step 5 — Verify 5 V Reference and Ground: Verify the 5 V reference and ground circuits at the sensor connector.
  • 6
Step 6 — Replace Sensor or Throttle Body if Signal Remains Erratic: Replace the sensor or throttle body only if the signal is erratic after cleaning and relearn.
