P0011 — A Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)

P0011 — A Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)

P0011 sets when the Bank 1 intake (or A) camshaft is over-advanced relative to the crankshaft beyond the calibrated limit. Oil and solenoid verification before expensive phaser or chain work prevents the most costly misdiagnosis on VVT-equipped engines. Always start with an oil change using the correct viscosity and a quality filter.

Fault Overview

Low oil pressure or incorrect oil viscosity, stuck VVT solenoid (oil control valve), clogged oil control passages, failed VVT actuator (phaser), stretched timing chain, and incorrect oil filter are the primary causes. Low oil level or delayed oil pressure on cold start is a common trigger. On some engines a stretched chain will set P0011 along with correlation codes.

Possible Causes

  1. 1.Low oil pressure or incorrect oil viscosity
  2. 2.Stuck VVT solenoid (oil control valve)
  3. 3.Clogged oil control passages
  4. 4.Failed VVT actuator (phaser)
  5. 5.Stretched timing chain
  6. 6.Incorrect oil filter

Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence

AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.

5 steps locked behind Technician Mode
  • 1
Step 1 — Verify Oil Level, Condition, and Viscosity: Verify oil level, condition, and viscosity. Use the OEM-specified viscosity. Perform an oil change if overdue or incorrect.
  • 2
Step 2 — Check Actual vs Desired Cam Position: Check actual vs desired cam position on the scan tool. Confirm the cam is over-advanced relative to the target.
  • 3
Step 3 — Command the VVT Solenoid and Monitor Response: Command the VVT solenoid and monitor cam position response. A stuck solenoid will not move the cam.
  • 4
Step 4 — Measure Oil Pressure: Measure oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. Low pressure prevents the VVT system from operating correctly.
  • 5
Step 5 — Inspect and Clean the VVT Solenoid and Screens: Inspect and clean the VVT solenoid and oil control screens. Sludge is a common cause of solenoid sticking.
  • 6
Step 6 — Evaluate Timing Chain and Phaser if Oil and Solenoid Are Good: Evaluate the timing chain and phaser only if oil, solenoid, and oil pressure are all proven good.
