NOx Sensor Heater Circuit Diagnostics
NOx sensor heater faults are high-current circuit diagnostics at the sensor connector first. The heater element fails before the sensing element on many units — but a blown fuse or open feed produces the same fault code without any sensor failure.

Fault Overview
NOx sensor heater faults — open, short, or performance class — indicate the ECM detected a fault in the heater element control circuit. Failed heater element, harness open or short, connector corrosion, and control driver issues are the primary causes. The heater element fails before the sensing element on many NOx sensor units — this is a documented pattern. Water intrusion at the connector is a documented cause of heater circuit faults. Heater circuit proof prevents replacing sensors for fuse or open feed issues — a blown fuse or open feed produces the same fault code as a failed heater element.
Engine & Platform Coverage
Symptoms
- •NOx sensor heater fault active
- •NOx heater open or short indication
- •SCR sensor heater code
- •NOx sensor not reaching operating temperature
- •SCR efficiency fault following heater fault
Possible Causes
- 1.Failed heater element — heater element failure before sensing element
- 2.Harness open — open in heater feed or ground circuit
- 3.Harness short — short in heater circuit
- 4.Connector corrosion — water intrusion at sensor connector
- 5.Blown fuse — fuse in heater circuit
Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence
AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.
6 steps locked behind Technician Mode- 1Single Action Gate — Identify Upstream vs Downstream Sensor: Identify whether the heater fault is on the upstream (inlet) or downstream (outlet) NOx sensor. Upstream and downstream sensors have different diagnostic implications — a downstream heater fault can affect SCR efficiency monitoring. Confirm the sensor location before any electrical measurements.
- 2Binary Decision Gate — Heater Resistance Check: Measure heater element resistance per OEM specification. An open heater resistance confirms element failure. A resistance below the minimum specification confirms a shorted heater element. Compare to OEM specification for the specific sensor type.
- 3Override Manager — Power Feed Voltage When Commanded: Verify power feed voltage at the heater circuit when the heater is commanded. No voltage at the heater feed confirms a blown fuse or open feed circuit. Voltage present with no heater response confirms an open element or circuit downstream of the feed.
- 4Safety Interceptor — Current Draw Test: Perform a current draw test on the heater circuit when commanded. Current draw tests identify open and shorted heaters when resistance measurement is not practical. An open heater draws no current. A shorted heater draws above-normal current.
- 5Resume Point — Water Intrusion Inspection: Inspect the sensor connector for water intrusion. Water intrusion at the NOx sensor connector is a documented cause of heater circuit faults. Inspect connector seals and housing for water entry paths. Clean or replace water-intruded connectors before sensor replacement.
- 6Verification Loop — Post-Repair Heater Operation Confirmation: After repair, verify the NOx sensor heater reaches operating temperature. Confirm SCR efficiency monitoring returns to normal. Monitor for return of heater faults over extended operation.
- 7Repair Ledger Output — Fuse, Harness, or Sensor Decision: Replace blown fuse if feed circuit fault is confirmed. Repair harness open or short if circuit fault is confirmed. Replace NOx sensor after heater circuit proof confirms element failure. Do not replace sensor for a fuse or open feed fault.
