2018–2022 Mack Anthem / Pinnacle Fan Control and Overheat Path
Mack overheat diagnosis starts with valid ECT and proven fan response. Thermostat service first on trucks where the fan never engaged is the most documented misdiagnosis pattern on this platform.

Fault Overview
This YMM page covers Mack Anthem and Pinnacle overheat complaints in the 2018–2022 model years where fan request and fan drive response must be proven before thermostat conclusions. Fan circuit open or short, failed fan drive, false ECT sensor faults, shroud airflow issues, and true thermostat or cooling faults secondary are the primary causes. Always consult current Mack service literature by VIN for platform-specific service information.
Engine & Platform Coverage
Symptoms
- •Overheat complaint with no fan response
- •ECT high with fan circuit electrically intact
- •Thermostat replaced without resolving overheat
- •Fan request PID shows commanded on with no physical response
- •Shroud damage or missing seal reducing airflow
Possible Causes
- 1.Fan circuit open or short preventing command from reaching the fan drive
- 2.Failed fan drive assembly
- 3.False ECT sensor fault producing incorrect temperature reading
- 4.Shroud airflow issues reducing cooling effectiveness
- 5.True thermostat or cooling faults secondary to fan failure
Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence
AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.
4 steps locked behind Technician Mode- 1Step 1 — Validate ECT: Verify ECT sensor accuracy with an IR thermometer at the thermostat housing. A false low ECT reading will prevent the ECM from requesting the fan even when the engine is genuinely hot. Consult current Mack service literature for ECT sensor specifications.
- 2Step 2 — Confirm Fan Request: With valid ECT, verify the ECM is requesting the fan. Check the fan request PID under conditions that should trigger engagement. If the ECM is not requesting the fan with valid ECT, diagnose the ECM fan control logic per current Mack service information.
- 3Step 3 — Prove Fan Circuit: With the fan commanded on, measure control voltage at the fan drive connector. Verify the fan control relay and fuse. Voltage absent at the connector with the ECM commanding on confirms an open in the control path.
- 4Step 4 — Verify Mechanical Fan Response: With electrical confirmed, observe physical fan engagement. A fan drive that receives correct voltage but does not engage mechanically is a failed fan drive.
- 5Step 5 — Deeper Cooling Path Only If Still Overheating: Proceed to thermostat, water pump, and cooling system flow diagnostics only after the fan is proven to request, command, engage, and move air correctly. Consult current Mack service literature for cooling system specifications.

Repair Steps
3 steps locked- 1Repair ECT sensor fault preventing fan request.
- 2Repair open or short fan circuit.
- 3Replace fan drive assembly after mechanical non-response is confirmed.
- 4Repair or replace missing or damaged fan shroud.
- 5Proceed to thermostat and cooling system diagnostics only after fan is proven.

Summary
Mack Anthem and Pinnacle overheat diagnosis starts with valid ECT and proven fan response. Thermostat and cooling system parts are the last step, not the first.
