Engine Brake / Exhaust Brake Interlock Verification Standard

Engine Brake / Exhaust Brake Interlock Verification Standard

Always verify the full interlock matrix before condemning engine or exhaust brake actuators.

Fault Overview

System process standard for verifying all interlocks that enable or inhibit engine compression brakes and exhaust brakes. Ensures the brake is allowed to operate only when conditions are safe and correct.

Engine & Platform Coverage

All platforms equipped with compression or exhaust brakes

Symptoms

  • •Jake brake interlock fault
  • •Exhaust brake won't activate
  • •Engine brake inhibit
  • •Brake interlock check required
  • •Clutch/brake Jake interlock

Possible Causes

  1. 1.Clutch switch fault or misadjustment
  2. 2.Brake switch fault
  3. 3.ABS active inhibit
  4. 4.Cruise status conflict
  5. 5.Neutral switch conflict

Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence

AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.

5 steps locked behind Technician Mode
  • 1
Step 1 — Command Engine/Exhaust Brake with Scan Tool: Command the engine or exhaust brake with a scan tool if available. Monitor the command status and any inhibit flags.
  • 2
Step 2 — Monitor All Interlock Statuses Simultaneously: Monitor clutch, brake, neutral, ABS, cruise, and any other inhibit statuses simultaneously while commanding the brake. Identify which interlock is preventing operation.
  • 3
Step 3 — Verify Each Interlock Switch State Matches Actual Vehicle Condition: Verify each interlock switch state matches the actual vehicle condition. A switch that reports the wrong state is the fault, not the brake actuator.
  • 4
Step 4 — Measure Voltage on Suspect Interlock Circuits: Measure voltage on any suspect interlock circuits in both states. Confirm the circuit is operating correctly.
  • 5
Step 5 — Adjust or Repair Switches as Required: Adjust or repair any interlock switches that are not operating correctly. This is the most common repair on "Jake won't come on" complaints.
  • 6
Step 6 — Re-Test Brake Operation After Interlocks Are Confirmed Good: Re-test brake operation after all interlocks are confirmed good. Only then proceed to actuator/solenoid electrical and mechanical tests.
