DPF Ash vs Soot Load Differentiation Standard

DPF Ash vs Soot Load Differentiation Standard

Differentiate ash from soot by performing a complete regen and comparing differential pressure before and after. Elevated post-regen pressure indicates ash that must be cleaned.

Fault Overview

Soot is combustible and removable by regeneration; ash is incombustible and requires cleaning or replacement of the DPF. Technicians often perform repeated regens or replace the DPF when the real issue is ash that regeneration cannot remove. The ECM calculates soot load from differential pressure and temperature models, but ash load PIDs are not available on all platforms.

Engine & Platform Coverage

All DPF-equipped diesels. Ash service intervals vary by platform and oil consumption rate.

Symptoms

  • •DPF ash vs soot
  • •Ash load high
  • •Soot load high
  • •DPF cleaning ash
  • •Differential pressure after regen
  • •Ash service interval

Possible Causes

  1. 1.Soot: incomplete combustion or failed regens
  2. 2.Ash: burned oil additives, engine wear metals, and slow accumulation over high mileage

Wiring & Circuit Notes

Confirm DPF differential pressure sensor and temperature sensor circuits are accurate so load calculations and post-regen pressure readings can be trusted.

DVOM Specs & Sensor Tests

Soot load percentage or grams (ECM calculated). Differential pressure at idle and under load before and after a complete regen. Post-regen differential pressure that remains elevated indicates ash. Ash load PIDs where available. Physical weighing or professional cleaning measurement for confirmation.

Diagnostic Flow — FSM Sequence

AI Diesel Tech enforces this evidence-gate sequence. Each gate must pass before advancing.

5 steps locked behind Technician Mode
  • 1
Step 1 — Record Soot Load, Ash Load, and Differential Pressure: Record soot load, ash load (if available), and differential pressure at idle and rated load. OEM ash service intervals and cleaning procedures must be followed.
  • 2
Step 2 — Perform a Complete, Successful Parked or Forced Regen: Perform a complete, successful parked or forced regen. Confirm temperature targets are met and the regen runs to completion without abort.
  • 3
Step 3 — Immediately Re-Measure Differential Pressure: Immediately re-measure differential pressure under the same conditions. This is the definitive soot vs ash test.
  • 4
Step 4 — Interpret the Post-Regen DP Result: If pressure returns to near-baseline, the load was primarily soot. If pressure remains significantly elevated, ash is the dominant restriction.
  • 5
Step 5 — Check Oil Consumption History and Engine Hours Against OEM Ash Interval: Check oil consumption history and engine hours/miles against OEM ash interval. Elevated oil consumption accelerates ash accumulation.
  • 6
Step 6 — Clean or Replace the DPF for Ash; Correct Soot-Producing Engine Faults: Clean or replace the DPF for ash; correct any soot-producing engine faults. Never perform ash cleaning without first confirming ash is the restriction.

Typical Repair Costs

Successful regen for soot (no parts cost); professional DPF cleaning for ash $400–800; DPF replacement if beyond cleaning $1,500–3,000+; correct oil consumption or combustion issues variable.
